Credits and sources

The map is built from public accounts and archives. Each case links to where we found it, and the sources and their text belong to their owners. We write our own summaries and never claim an account is true. If you are an owner and want something credited differently, changed or removed, please use the corrections page.

Where the cases come from

• BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization)
• NAWAC (North American Wood Ape Conservancy)
• Historical newspapers: the Library of Congress's Chronicling America and other public-domain pages
• International Society of Cryptozoology newsletters (1982 to 1996), through the Internet Archive
• The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register
• Wikipedia (text under CC BY-SA 4.0)
• Reddit, YouTube and TikTok, where people shared their own accounts

Mapping

• Place names are looked up with Nominatim using data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL).
• Country and state outlines: Natural Earth (public domain).
• The map is drawn with Leaflet.

Creature pictures

Every creature picture is an illustration, never a photo and never evidence. Most were painted for this site. The pictures for the vampire, Jersey Devil, shadow person, little people, mermaid, other canine and other feline were generated with the Z-Image-Turbo model (Apache 2.0), and the map captions each one as AI-generated.

How we treat people in the data

Private people's names are removed from the cases and exact private places are blurred. Details are in the privacy notice. Spotted a mistake? Tell us.
